Senior Advisor, Agriculture

Simon Bentley has 20 years of experience as a consultant advising the agribusiness sector on investments and markets and as a fund manager researching commodity investment strategies. His focus has been mainly on the markets for grains, oilseeds, sugar, and biofuels, but he has also advised on diverse other markets such as rubber, cocoa, and diamonds. Mr. Bentley has worked with several energy and chemical companies to help them understand how to enter the agricultural space, as well as with biotech companies searching for new crop technologies.

Mr. Bentley was for several years the VP of fund research in Singapore at Olam International’s commodity financial services business called Invenio. He left Invenio in 2013 to found Commoditia, a Singapore-registered company that he now uses as a vehicle to advise his clients in agribusiness, providing intelligence, data, and analysis. Since 2013, he has also served on the advisory board of Milltrust International Group.

Mr. Bentley studied Physics at Trinity College Oxford and Economics at the London School of Economics. In the past, he has worked as a lecturer at the Australian National University in Canberra, as well as at Warwick University in the UK.

Simon Bentley is the Managing Director at Commoditia, a boutique consultancy for the international agribusiness sector. Commoditia is recognised as one of the industry’s leading thinkers and analysts on issues affecting global carbohydrate and oilseed crop markets, including markets for grains, oilseeds, cassava, and sugar. The consultancy develops intelligence, data, analysis, and insights to advise and add value to companies investing in, managing risks across, or operating along the full agribusiness value chain, including the agricultural food chain.

Previously, Mr. Bentley served as Vice President of Invenio, an Olam International financial services business focused on developing fundamental models and analysis for trading the grain, oilseeds, sugar, rubber, coffee, and cocoa markets. Before that, he was the Director of Grains Research at LMC International Ltd, an international economic consultancy specialising in advising processors of grains, oilseeds, sugar, rubber, coffee, and cocoa crops.

His top skills include quantitative analysis, strategic insight, and economic modelling. He remains a prominent figure in the agribusiness sector, leveraging his extensive experience and expertise to guide companies through complex market landscapes, particularly within the agricultural food chain.
